Click the "Student Login " link on the left to open CGS in a new window. If this is your first time using CGS, choose "Collect new Organisms" and enter the Course ID and Account given to you by your instructor. You will then be asked to enter the names of your group members. You will be issued a password that will allow you to save your work and come back later if needed. After this, you will see the main population menu, which displays each of the populations that your instructor wants you to investigate. Choose a population by clicking on it, and then click the 'Go' button to proceed. Your instructor may ask that you view the populations in the order shown.

If this is your first time investigating the population that you have chosen, you will see a screen that tells you about the wild organisms that you will examine. Each wild population has at least one segregating trait, and you will need to perform test crosses to characterize the heritability of each trait.

Organisms can be crossed by clicking or dragging one male and one female into the crossing box on the right side of the screen. Once two organisms are in the crossing box, click the "Cross" button to create a new generation.

Organisms can be sorted and viewed according to sex, any single trait, or all traits by using the drop-down menus on the top of the vial.

Information about each vial can be found by clicking the "Analysis" button. Notes and vial info can be copied & pasted into a word processor for easy note taking. A Chi squared test can be performed by clicking the "Stats" button and entering an expected ratio.

To save your organisms and return to the Population Menu, click the "Done" button on the lower right corner of the screen.
