This is the Privacy Policy for the Classical Genetics Simulator software and website (CGS). For additional information, please see the CGS Terms and Conditions page

 

Instructor personal information

 

CGS may collect personal information about you when you request a CGS instructor account. Instructors who register for a CGS account via the website are asked to provide their name, institution, email address, phone number, and information about the course that they teach.  This information is used to generate relevant login credentials and to help the CGS developer understand the types of institutions and courses that are using the software. It is also used by the webmaster to contact the contact the instructor with information about how to access the account. On rare occasions, this information may be used by the webmaster to alert instructors about problems or issues that affect their account or their students. This information is not shared with third parties that are not specified in this policy document.

 

Student personal information

 

After a student successfully logs in using course-specific credentials provided by his or her instructor, the student may be asked to provide his or her name.  The student’s name is requested so that the instructor is able to view the progress of the student.  Student names are only provided to the student’s instructor for the purpose of allowing the instructor to track student progress within the CGS software.  If desired, an instructor may disable this feature via the privacy settings inside the instructor account.  No other personal information is collected from students. Student names are not made available to any third parties that are not specified in this policy document.

 

CGS is designed to be used by college students over the age of 13.  CGS does not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13.  In the case that it is discovered that a child under 13 has provided personal information to the software or website it will be immediately deleted from the servers.  

 

Cookies and other technologies

 

CGS does not use cookies or externally hosted services like Google Analytics to analyze website traffic.

 

Sharing of information

 

Information that is collected will never be disclosed or transferred to a third party that is not described in this privacy policy.

 

Deletion of data

 

Student data is routinely deleted after three months of inactivity.  This includes student names and data generated by the student while using the CGS software.  Instructors are also able to permanently delete student data at any time by deleting a student account.  Instructor information and account settings are typically retained for 5 years or longer so that if an instructor takes time away from a course and then teaches it again in the future, the account settings will still be available.  

 

Any person who wishes to have their data permanently deleted from the CGS server may submit a request by email to have their information permanently deleted.

 

Security

 

CGS has adopted generally accepted standards of technology and operational security in order to protect personal information from loss, misuse, alteration or destruction. Student and instructor data are stored on servers in Ohio and Virginia, USA. Only authorized personnel and third parties mentioned in this privacy policy are provided access to personal information.  Any personal information is treated as strictly confidential. Despite these precautions, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.  Thus it cannot be guaranteed that unauthorized persons will not obtain access to your personal information.

CGS may contain links to other sites.  If you click on a third-party link, you will be directed to that site. Note that these external sites are not operated by CGS. Therefore, it is advised that you to review the Privacy Policy of these websites. CGS has have no control over, and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party sites or services.

 

Changes to this privacy policy

 

CGS reserves the right to change, modify, add or remove or otherwise update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When changes are made they will be made available on the CGS website.  Your continued use of the website and/or our services will constitute your consent to the updated policy. This Privacy Policy was last updated in April 2022.
